# Add field to all documents of an index

Hi I need to add a new field (with a default) to all documents already
indexed.
I guess bulk update will do it?

Hello John ,
Update by query plugin would be a good choice -

Just set a match\_all query.
Bulk API with updates to all the documents should also work.
