# App Search Migration to Elasticsearch

Hi Elastic team,

I'm reaching out here as I want to do migration from App Search to Elasticsearch however I'm not sure how do I start with this : [From App Search to Elasticsearch — Tap into the future of search | Elastic Blog](https://www.elastic.co/blog/app-search-to-elasticsearch)

I did look into the documentation for the Python notebook :

However, it seems like this notebook is for Elastic Cloud.

My current setup for Elastic is that we self-hosted, and the version we are in is 8.18.3

My App Search right now, there is 2 search engine that has been actively used, which is first is via Connector Microsoft SQL and second search engine is based on manually upload data into App Search engine.

I believe the one impacted would be data that has been upload manually into the App Search engine. The one I pull data via Connectors would not be impacted as its within Elasticsearch Indices, do correct me if I'm wrong.

Need help how do I migrate the data from App Search engine to Elasticsearch.

Hi I think I need confirmation if I really need to do the migration as I realized that all my data is within Elasticsearch Indices, and the fact that I manually upload but its through API, do my data need to be migrated?

Hi there!

You can use the exporter notebook against a self-managed cluster, per [these Elasticsearch Python client connection instructions](https://www.elastic.co/docs/reference/elasticsearch/clients/python/connecting#connect-self-managed-new). Let us know if you have any further trouble getting that working.

You'll have to decide for yourself if and when to migrate, knowing that App Search is not available in 9.0+ and you'll miss out on all the latest and greatest Elasticsearch features that are being added in each release.
