Hi all,

Does each endpoint of Elasticsearch’s API have a canonical name? For example, let’s take the “PUT mapping API” described [here](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/5.3/indices-put-mapping.html). I’ve found two candidate names in the source code:

- [`indices.put_mapping`](https://github.com/elastic/elasticsearch/blob/v5.3.2/rest-api-spec/src/main/resources/rest-api-spec/api/indices.put_mapping.json#L2)
- [`indices:admin/mapping/put`](https://github.com/elastic/elasticsearch/blob/v5.3.2/core/src/main/java/org/elasticsearch/action/admin/indices/mapping/put/PutMappingAction.java#L30)

I'm wondering about all this because I'd like to be precise when discussing or documenting Elasticsearch clients and the server features that they may or may not support.

Not really. We talk about them using the name of the action class. So the on you are linking we'd call "put mapping".
