# Are users and roles functionality available in the free version?

We're currently running an instance of Kibana internally (v7.8.0). Previously, I know the user/roles features were only available via XPack and the paid license. Is this still the case? If it isn't, is there any docs about how to go about enabling this functionality? It's sometimes very difficult to tell what only applies to the paid version vs. the free version from the docs.
