# Backup and restoration possibilities

What are all the backup and restoration possibilities offered by the ELK stack version 8.8.1 pls.

You need to use the [snapshot and restore APIs](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/8.9/snapshot-restore.html), which allows you to backup Elasticsearch to shared storage or object stores like e.g. S3 and GCS. That is the only supported backup mechanism.

You use the snapshot API to create backups and the restore API to restore them when needed.
