# Basic License and User/Role-Management

hi,
i succesfully installed my first ELK-server. i followed the guides on elastic.co (and installed the x-pack plugins). x-pack seems necessary to me.
now i activated the basic license and i can't manage the user and roles anymore (because of the missing security feature!?).
are these users and roles still there...but only "disabled"? what will happen if i activate a gold license some day?

When you start x-pack without license, a trial license is automatically generated.
It gives you a trial period for all x-pack feature (platinum level).
Security is available from gold license.
Once you have a basic license, it disables security module.
