# Can I change the elastic built-in user password?

Hi, I was wandering if I can change the password of the elastic user. after its set trough bin/elasticsearch-setup-passwords ?

Yes you can with [Kibana UI or API.](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/setup-passwords.html#:~:text=After%20you%20set%20a%20password,or%20the%20Change%20Password%20API.)

> After you set a password for the `elastic` user, the bootstrap password is no longer active and you cannot use this command. Instead, you can change passwords by using the **Management \> Users** UI in Kibana or the [Change Password API](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/security-api-change-password.html).
