# "Cannot copy field \[ \] to fields \[ \]. Copy-to currently only works for value-type fields, not objects

ES = ver 7.14  
Linux , mysql 8  
The error happens after upgrade to **7.14** from 7.13  
the issue :  
I use Logstash to input to ES from MySQL  
U used to add null (nil) value to copy\_to field, after upgrade it is not accepted and throw an exception  
e.x  
{  
...  
"product\_id"=\>12345,  
"price"=\>10,  
@timestamp"=\>2021-08-03T23:51:58.209Z,  
....  
"categories"=\>nil,  
.....  
}

**"reason"=\>"Cannot copy field [categories] to fields [catch\_all]. Copy-to currently only works for value-type fields, not objects."}}}}**

Logstash :  
output {  
elasticsearch {  
hosts =\> "localhost:9200"  
index =\> "my-index"  
document\_id =\> "%{product\_id}"  
**doc\_as\_upsert** =\> true  
action =\> "update"  
}  
stdout { codec =\> rubydebug }  
}

We're having the same issue. It appears that copying "null" values triggers the error ... this started happening after we upgraded our cluster to 7.14.0.

A fix is coming in 7.14.1 [https://github.com/elastic/elasticsearch/pull/76665/files](https://github.com/elastic/elasticsearch/pull/76665/files)
