# Clarifications regarding aliases?

When i went through aliases documentation [https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/indices-aliases.html](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/indices-aliases.html) . i had one doubt
`It is an error to index to an alias which points to more than one index.`
What does the above sentence mean?

When an alias points to several indexes, what behaviour would you expect? Should every index be updated? Or just one?
Perhaps the phrasing should be changed: "Trying to index into an alias that points to more than one index is not supported and will result in an error"
