Continuing the discussion from [Does close index free up disk or memory](https://discuss.elastic.co/t/does-close-index-free-up-disk-or-memory/258868/2):

Maybe this warning about losing data ("To reduce the risk of data loss..." [Open / Close Index API | Elasticsearch Guide [6.8] | Elastic](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/6.8/indices-open-close.html#indices-open-close)) from 6.8 documentation should be added to 7/8 documentation. It seems to be missing: [Close index API | Elasticsearch Guide [7.17] | Elastic](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/7.17/indices-close.html)

Or, is there a reason why it is missing? Has something changed making this warning no longer relevant?

In newer versions closed indices are tracked by the cluster and if a node holding a shard copy was to go down the cluster will recover it to another node. This was not the case before version 7, which is why the warning was in place.
