# Coordinating node

I know data nodes can act as coordinating nodes if one is not set; but, if I set up a designated coordinating-only node does that mean the data nodes will completely stop performing the coordinating function? Or will the data nodes still perform the coordinating function ALONG WITH the coordinating-only node?

The node that receives the request will act as the coordinating node, so it depends on which nodes your clients connect to. If you only expose the coordinating-only nodes to the clients and do not enable sniffing the data nodes should not coordinate any requests.

When you say "which nodes the clients are connected to" are you speaking of Kibana? Our users use Kibana for all requests. We will be hosting a Kibana container on the coordinating only node.
