# Default shard allocation method

Would like to know out of the following methods which is the default shard allocation method used in elasticsearch 5.4.3 and 6.2.1

Cluster Level Shard Allocation  
Disk-based Shard Allocation  
Shard Allocation Awareness and Forced Awareness  
Shard Allocation Filtering

Allocation happens on the cluster level, so the first document you seem to be referring to is the default method.

The other docs you are referring to are ways that allocation can be influenced.

Sure. Thank you. I was primarily looking into the disk based shards allocation where different water mark threshold values are mentioned for the disk size. Default low being 85%, was thinking whether to have additional 15% of disk space for disk sizing.
