Hello All,
I am new to Elasticsearch.

I wanted to create a description sub-field for each field in the index.
For ex.

```auto
    {'properties':
          {
             'location':
	          {
                   'type': 'geo_point',
		           'description': 'this is geopoint'
               },
	          'date':
		       {
                    'type': 'date',
		            'format': "yyyyMMdd'T'HHmmss:SSSSSS",
		            'description': 'this is date'
		        }
	       }
    }
```

Would it be possible to add description like above in Elasticsearch Index

No but you could add comments in your json like

```
// This is a comment
```

And store this commented json in your code repository (git or whatever). Note that the comment won't be stored in elasticsearch itself. So if you `GET` the `_mapping` back, comments will have been removed.

Hi David,

Thanks for the quick reply.
The solution that you suggest, would be part of the program and say, a Kibana user will not be able to see those descriptions for each field when indices are loaded.
I was looking for a solution which will keep the description in the indices itself.

It's not supported. Some discussions
