In which environment are you acting? EC2?

Can you use some proxy app (e.g. nginx) to protect access?

Peter.

PS: here is an open issue [https://github.com/elasticsearch/elasticsearch/issues/664](https://github.com/elasticsearch/elasticsearch/issues/664)

What does "disable remote access" mean here exactly?

You can lock down ES pretty hard (eg. disable multicast, disable HTTP,
etc). You can put a proxy in front of ES, as Karussel suggest, example
config: \<[GitHub - karmi/cookbook-elasticsearch: https://github.com/elasticsearch/cookbook-elasticsearch](https://github.com/karmi/cookbook-elasticsearch/blob/master/)
templates/default/elasticsearch\_proxy\_nginx.conf.erb\>
