# Do I need to update the mapping after updating the index template?

Hi,
I'm using weekly indeces and will soon have some data incoming that requires adding a few new fields.
If I update the existing template and wait for the index to roll over to a new week before I start indexing data with the new fields, will the new field be properly added to the existing mapping or do I need to update the mapping first as well? The new data will only exist in future indeces.
