# Docs: Creating a New Beat

Not sure I should post this issue here ^^'

I'm creating a new custom Beat following this documentation: [https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/beats/libbeat/5.4/beater-interface.html](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/beats/libbeat/5.4/beater-interface.html) and also [https://www.elastic.co/blog/build-your-own-beat](https://www.elastic.co/blog/build-your-own-beat).

However, they both mention that the config file for the beat is located at `etc/beat.yml`, but it's actually at the project root: `<whatever>beat.yml`.

Or am I mistaken?

The file under the project root is actually generated from the file under `_meta/beat.yml`. We moved it there from the `etc/` directory. Thanks for reporting that, I'm going to fix the docs.
