# ECS expect \`target\` value

Try enabling `--log.level debug`. It may be going through one of the [exception pathways](https://github.com/logstash-plugins/logstash-filter-geoip/blob/099f1fdc659d205906cd79487c253609e57eadb4/src/main/java/org/logstash/filters/geoip/GeoIPFilter.java#L196). If the source field does not exist the event [would get tagged](https://discuss.elastic.co/t/geoip-lookup-failure-though-all-geoip-fields-are-populated/195267/12), so I don't think it is that.
