# ECS network.direction field

Hi All,  
Can anybody help me in understanding the meaning of network.direction field in ECS ?  
I went through [Network Fields | Elastic Common Schema (ECS) Reference [8.11] | Elastic](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/ecs/current/ecs-network.html)

> Please help me with an example to understand the meaning of :  
> 1.) external  
> 2.) internal  
> 3.) inbound  
> 4.) outbound  
> 5.) unknown
