Wanted to give Elastic Search a spin. I have downloaded
elasticsearch-0.17.6 as a zip file. From the site's main page it was
not obvious that Elastic Search works on Windows. After installing and
reading the file README.textile, I came to know that it works on
Windows.

# I had not set the environment system variable path on Windows and had to run elasticsearch.bat from the bin folder of the installation. However, I get an error:

D:\elasticsearch-0.17.6\bin\>elasticsearch.bat

I added D:\elasticsearch-0.17.6\lib\elasticsearch-0.17.6.jar; to my
existing classpath, but it gives the same error.

What exactly have you downloaded? The source (from github), or the actual
distribution? You should download the actual distribution:
[Elasticsearch Platform — Find real-time answers at scale | Elastic](http://www.elasticsearch.org/download/).

Yes, I have downloaded the latest stable release of elasticsearch (0.17.6)
from [Elasticsearch Platform — Find real-time answers at scale | Elastic](http://www.elasticsearch.org/download/)

The URL leads me to download the zip file from -
[https://github.com/downloads/elasticsearch/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-0.17.6.zip](https://github.com/downloads/elasticsearch/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-0.17.6.zip)

Is this correct?

Then it should work. Setting JAVA\_HOME and running hte elasticsearch.bat
script. Are you sure you are running the correct install? It seems like it
logged using slf4j, and slf4j is not part of the actual download.

I have the JAVA\_HOME set and I am running the correct install.

Still no luck.

Can you edit the elasticsearch.bat file and echo the execution line (starts
with "%JAVA\_HOME%\bin\java")? See where things are pointing, and gist it as
well.

I think that you have CLASSPATH env var set, which is appended to the
classpath used to start elasticsearch. If you clear it, or remove it from
the following like in the batch file:

set ES\_CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;%ES\_HOME%/lib/_;%ES\_HOME%/lib/sigar/_

Then things should work. I will open an issue to not include the CLASSPATH
in the script, we don't really need it...

Thanks Shay. I removed %CLASSPATH%; from the line -
set ES\_CLASSPATH=%ES\_HOME%/lib/_;%ES\_HOME%/lib/sigar/_

and it worked.
