Can someone explain what happens under the hood? Is it reindex from remote or something else?

Cross cluster replication is not using reindex from remote. This page described in a general way how CCR works: [https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elastic-stack-overview/6.5/ccr-overview.html#\_the\_mechanics\_of\_replication](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elastic-stack-overview/6.5/ccr-overview.html#_the_mechanics_of_replication)
