It depends on what you mean by serve, but transport is handled by Netty and storage by Lucene. You might be wondering if it is using Tomcat or Glassfish or something too. The answer is not usually. There is a plugin that will let you install it in a servlet container but most folks just run it as a standalone service. It has an init script and stuff.
