# Elasticsearch - How to start the instance/cluster with Gold or Platinum license

Is their a way to statically start the Elasticsearch instances with Gold or Platinum license.

or is it only enabled on calling "PUT \_license" API with license JSON

Yes I think for a brand new cluster you must use the license API or Kibana to upload a commercial license, I do not think there a way to bootstrap with a commercial license other than [trial](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/7.11/license-settings.html)
