elasticsearch 2.2.0. For Marvel I downloaded marvel-agent-2.2.0.zip and license-2.2.0.zip.  
I created a directory called /ma/test\_01/es-vader/plugins and unzipped the files there.  
I added the following line /ma/test\_01/config/elasticsearch.yml file  
path.plugins: /ma/test\_01/es-vader/plugins

Am I missing a PATH variable somewhere? This is running on solaris 5.10 sparc server.

You shouldn't manually extract thins like that.
