## Kibana environment variables I used for kibana docker image
    environment:
      SERVER_NAME: "kibana"
      SERVER_PORT: 9548
      ELASTICSEARCH_PASSWORD: ${ES_PASSWORD}
      ELASTICSEARCH_HOSTS: "http://elasticsearch:9550"
      KIBANA_DEFAULTAPPID: "dashboard/Default"
      LOGGING_QUIET: "true"
      XPACK_SECURITY_ENCRYPTIONKEY: ${KIBANA_XPACK_SEC_KEY}
      XPACK_SECURITY_SESSIONTIMEOUT: 600000

```
**Issue** :
A. When I run elasticsearch queries via kibana console at least took **20000 ms** return output to the console. But if I run the same query directly(elasticsearch) via curl or postman or chrome it took only less than **200 ms** to get the output
B. even this happening when I loading kibana dashboad(not all the time), get following error message and not loading some graphs. but I can't see any exceptions or errors from console logs
```auto
Error in visualization

[esaggs] > Request to Elasticsearch failed: {"error":{}}

```
If I refresh the page, I can see all the graphs.
Herewith link the chrome performance profiles.
[Chrome performance profile directly hitting elasticsearch query](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ukYbaIk9MoJOlBce0kgcLJpLG3svA5wD/view?usp=sharing) URL: `http://testnode.mycompany.com.nz:9550/_cat/indices` [![screenshot](https://i.stack.imgur.com/qNq2N.png)](https://i.stack.imgur.com/qNq2N.png)
What I not understand is If I run same docker compose file in my laptop(windows 10, 16GB, i7 2cpu, docker desktop running) i'm not facing any slowness either kibana dev console query or directly query elasticseach.
Anyone having this issue and appreciate let me know how to fix this?
Thanks in advance.
Hey @Sha, can you try disabling auto-complete in Dev Tools to see if this improves the performance?
Hi @Brandon_Kobel, Thanks for the suggestion, I have disable auto complete settings, In average 50%(around **10000 ms** to load) improve the performance of console query via kibana compare to enable auto complete settings. but I still not similar to the direct elasticsearch query.
![after disable auto complete settings](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/elastic/original/3X/c/f/cf736b20b7757f88a11009f90a3a936e82168870.png)
btw I sow following info message in kibana logs,
`["info","optimize"],"pid":6,"message":"Optimizing and caching bundles for core, space_selector, ml, dashboardViewer, apm, maps, canvas, siem, uptime, lens, kibana, stateSessionStorageRedirect, status_page and timelion. This may take a few minutes" `
I have few questions here,
1. according to the available hardware resources does kibana optimize the performance?
2. how can I get more details like base on what metrics, kibana use for optimize the performance?
3. is it possible to get details report kind of thing what has been optimized?
4. can we override the kibana performance optimization settings ?
Thank you.
Hey @Sha, the following message is displayed when Kibana is building the client-side assets
> ["info","optimize"],"pid":6,"message":"Optimizing and caching bundles for core, space\_selector, ml, dashboardViewer, apm, maps, canvas, siem, uptime, lens, kibana, stateSessionStorageRedirect, status\_page and timelion. This may take a few minutes"
Kibana doesn't perform any environment/platform specific optimizations.
Can you attach the performance logs when you're now using Dev Tools without autocomplete enabled?
Hey @Sha, let's try eliminating the browser as the source of the slow-down. Would you mind executing the following using cURL after substituting `elastic` and `changeme` for your username and password?
```auto
curl -u elastic:changeme 'http://localhost:5601/api/console/proxy?path=_cat%2Findices&method=GET' -X POST -H 'kbn-xsrf: true'

```
Hi @Brandon_Kobel,
it also took around 10s to get output. similar to the browser.
```auto

I found some interesting thing here, when I try to curl directly elasticsearch query with username and password, it took 4 s to get the output.

```auto
time curl -i elastic:somepass 'http://localhost:9550/_cat/indices' -X GET
real 0m4.172s
user 0m0.002s
sys 0m0.006s
```

If i try without username/password it took only 0.165s

```auto
time curl -i 'http://localhost:9550/_cat/indices' -X GET
real 0m0.165s
user 0m0.001s
sys 0m0.008s
```

So I try without username/password for elasticseach but it not make any different

```auto
time curl -i 'http://localhost:9548/api/console/proxy?path=_cat%2Findices&method=GET' -X POST -H 'kbn-xsrf: true'
real 0m10.166s
user 0m0.004s
sys 0m0.003s
```

Do you have idea why elasticsearch direct query without password is very efficient?

@Brandon_Kobel Sorry my bad. i used curl -i instead of curl -u. with password or without password it gives(elasticsearch direct query) very fast output.

```auto
Hey @Sha, let's try increasing the Kibana logs to see if they tell us anything useful. If you're running Kibana using docker-compose, you can add the following to your `environment` `LOGGING_VERBOSE=true`. If you can filter the logs to only when you're running that cURL command and attach them here in a [gist](https://gist.github.com/) it'll help us debug further.
Hey @Sha, in the `environment` section for Kibana, I assume you have multiple entries for `ELASTICSEARCH_HOSTS`? Can you try changing this to only have one entry for one of the instances of Elasticsearch?
Hi @Brandon_Kobel,
I'm not sure how to do it in 3node es cluster. Not sure what you mean. you mean put the current 3 node elasticsearch cluster into single node? or probably do i missing any config? [docker-complse.yml](https://gist.github.com/shamera82/11843d462dadf0880fe168a01a2f6213)
Hey @Sha, thanks for sharing your docker-compose.yml. You only have a single entry for `ELASTICSEARCH_HOSTS`, so you can ignore my previous request to change this value.
I was able to run your docker-compose.yml on a RHEL 7 machine, and I've been unable to replicate the slowness that you're seeing in Dev Tools. Are you actively ingesting a large amount of data into Elasticsearch when you're seeing this slowness? Can you try momentarily pausing your data ingestion to see if that alleviates the slowness you're seeing? What type of disk are you using for your server and how is it attached? Is it a remote network filesystem that is mounted locally?
Hi @Brandon_Kobel, Thanks for taking time and try to replicate it on your end.
> Are you actively ingesting a large amount of data into Elasticsearch when you're seeing this slowness?
I don't think so. I'm not sure how to check that. But we have very old version(Version: 5.2.2) of elk stack runs on another vm node with same amount data it's preform very well. only different is hardware (4 cpus and 12G ram) and it's rpm based installation.
> Can you try momentarily pausing your data ingestion to see if that alleviates the slowness you're seeing?
I have stop the logstash docker container and tried the query via kibana and it's still slow.
in host node it's VM disk.
I assumed it's related to hardware. Only thing I'm not able figure out why direct elasticsearch query is very efficient compare to query via kibana.
Any ways we going to test this config on another host (4CPU and 12G RAM, RHEL7.7) on next week. I'll update the post about the performance.
Do you have any suggestions to kibana config, which we not considered in docker-compose file?
Thanks,
Sha.
Hey @Sha, everything in the kibana config looks good. It's very peculiar that Dev Tools queries are running slowly in Kibana while the same query performs so well against ES directly. Unfortunately, the current logs aren't revealing where the slow down might be.
I'm very interested to learn how to test on another host goes next week. Our best bet at this point is to figure out how to replicate the slowness that you're seeing so that we can dig deeper.
Hi @Brandon_Kobel, we start running elk stack on new host (4CPU and 12G RAM, RHEL7.7). but still I can't see it's improve the performance query via kibana. (we user same docker-compose file)
Still not able to figure it out why query via kibana is very slow response compared to direct elasticsearch query.
@Brandon_Kobel, Issue is the hardware, I have tested in again with increasing to 16RAM, 8CPU virtual machine and result is wonderful. **less than 1s**
```auto

Final Update. I'm happy to say found the real issue behind this. Issue is the docker service discovery. Due to some reason docker service discovery not happened. as soon as I change the **elasticsearch host** to **IP** get the real performance.

Previous kibana configuration

```auto
ELASTICSEARCH_HOSTS: "http://elasticsearch:9550"
```

New configuration

```auto
ELASTICSEARCH_HOSTS: "http://172.20.1.2:9550"
```

@Brandon_Kobel, Thank you again.
