# Elasticsearch upgrade from 5.6 to 7.4

Hello,

We have our production cluster running on 5.6 version. We would like to upgrade the Elasticsearch to 7.4 version. Is it possible to directly migrate from 5.x to 7.x ?

Also we are using parent child relationship in our current Elasticsearch architecture.

Hi @nisham

It is not possible to directly migrate from 5.x to 7.x. Take a look at [here](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/setup-upgrade.html) for the upgrade paths. Read carefully, as there is a lot you have to consider.

It's not possible.  
You need to reindex if you want to do this.
