Hello,

Faced an error where kibana failed to retrieve password hash for reserved user [kibana] at least one primary shard for the index .security-7 was missing. Followed the instructions provided here at
[https://discuss.elastic.co/t/elk-7-8-0-two-node-cluster-at-least-one-primary-shard-for-the-index-security-7-is-unavailable/261031/3](https://discuss.elastic.co/t/elk-7-8-0-two-node-cluster-at-least-one-primary-shard-for-the-index-security-7-is-unavailable/261031/3), but still not able to authenticate.

curl -XGET '[http://localhost:9200/\_cat/indices?v](http://localhost:9200/_cat/indices?v)' print the following:

restarting kibana brings that error:

```auto
[ERROR][plugins.alerting.monitoring_alert_disk_usage] Executing Rule default:monitoring_alert_disk_usage:a6ce4d60-eedb-11ed-8583-45292c39ddfa has resulted in Error: security_exception: [security_exception] Reason: unable to authenticate with provided credentials and anonymous access is not allowed for this request, caused by: "" - Error: security_exception: [security_exception] Reason: unable to authenticate with provided credentials and anonymous access is not allowed for this request
```

Restarting Elasticsearch brings that error

```auto
o.e.x.s.a.RealmsAuthenticator] [ELASTICSEARCH-NODE-1] Authentication of [elastic] was terminated by realm [reserved] - failed to authenticate user [elastic]
```

Tried to reset Elastic and Kibana passwords but no luck. Any idea what is a possible cause for that?

`curl http://localhost:9200/_cat/nodes/?v&h=name,du,dt,dup,hp,hc,rm,rp,r`

I don't think you ran that command because it's not showing the disk usage and disk total and disk percent which is a thing we need to look at.

You just ran the cat nodes without the rest of it

Try to paste it in again or cut it in again.... You can see there's an underline where it thinks the link ends...

You can go look up that in the documents we need to see the disk space

Most likely you need to delete an index... Or provide more disk space

I think this should answer your question

```auto
I have over 1 TB available disk space. I there a way to rebuild the .security-7 index other than restoring a snapshot?
I changed the Title to something more accurate/ helpful.
Restoring is the best approach...
Perhaps with the better title you might get more suggestions.
It is not clear to me how to recreate the index...
Did you try to reset the elastic password?
> **[elasticsearch-reset-password | Elasticsearch Guide \[8.8\] | Elastic](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/reset-password.html)**
Also did you stop and start elasticsearch? Then try resetting the elastic password
This is the danger of a single node cluster... It looks like you have lost other indices as well... do you have any idea how you lost it in the first place?
Hi stephenb,
I managed to restore the index by upgrading Elasticsearch and Kibana. Now the above errors are gone and only kibana is still throwing that error
```auto
[ERROR][savedobjects-service] [.kibana] Action `failed with 'no_shard_available_action_ex>

checking the status of the shards i can see that there still UNASSIGNED PRIMARY shards, reason: CLUSTER\_RECOVERED

Hi @A.Hani

Back to the previous question what happened to cause this? Looks like your server or disk crashed?

First can you run

`GET .kibana/_alias`

Take a look at the [allocation explain api](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/cluster-allocation-explain.html) any time you need insight into allocation issues.

Then run allocation explain on one of the regular indices

```auto
GET _cluster/allocation/explain?pretty
{
  "index": "cf_http-2023-05-06",
  "shard": 0,
  "primary": true
}
```

Then run the same on the actual index the the `.kibana` alias is pointing to.

Also when you look in the elasticsearch logs do see errors like

```auto
Caused by: org.elasticsearch.ElasticsearchException: java.io.IOException: failed to read /var/lib/elasticsearch/nodes/0/indices/3mUO113ES22qeEDguuH-VA/0/_state/state-23.st
at org.elasticsearch.ExceptionsHelper.maybeThrowRuntimeAndSuppress(ExceptionsHelper.java:159) ~[elasticsearch-7.16.3.jar:7.16.3]
```

Most likely the actual elasticsearch data is corrupt from some severe issue, you will probably need to recover from a snapshot unless there is some unusual allocation setting (doubtful)

We my might be able to fix the `.kibana` index issue... But I suspect the normal indices going to be bigger problem.
