# How to add custom trace id generator in elastic APM java agent code base

Can someone please let me know if there is a way to plug custom trace id generator in the elastic APM java agent code base.

Currently there is no way to customize the trace-ID generation in the elastic apm generator.
You could alternatively use the OpenTelemetry java agent with a custom extension which [configures the IDGenerator](https://github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-java/blob/main/sdk-extensions/autoconfigure-spi/src/main/java/io/opentelemetry/sdk/autoconfigure/spi/AutoConfigurationCustomizer.java#L108).
May I ask what you are trying to achieve? Maybe we can propose a different solution.
