# How to change index status from warm to hot

How can I change the index from warm to hot?

Hi @opouwels,

this is expert level, but you can use [ILM move to step](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/ilm-move-to-step.html#ilm-move-to-step-path-params) API for this. You may also need to fix the allocation of the index, depending on which step you choose to move to.

Please take adequate measures like backup, testing etc. before carrying this out.
