# How to get average document size in an index?

HI,

I am using Elastic Stack v6.3.0. I have multiple indices. Is is possible to get average document size (the size of a single entry in an index) of a particular index?

Total size of the index divided by document count, the `_cat/index` API will give you both those 🙂

If you are looking for the size or the source JSON documents you may need to install the [mapper size plugin](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/plugins/7.6/mapper-size.html) so you can get this through aggregations.
