# How to install the basic License

Hello,
I need x-pack so i need to install the free basic license.
in the subscriptions, i can download my license but how to install it and make it functional ?

You can use the [Update License API](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/6.2/update-license.html) to update the license. If you're also running Kibana, there is a page available with a file browse button that can be used to upload and update the license.

i didn't have a previous license to update it !?

You can't "not have a previous license". A license is generated for you already during the installation of X-Pack, you can read more about the process [here](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/x-pack/6.2/license-management.html)
