Hi,

(Sorry, I am not english. I am french, so, please, be patient with me, in english :)).

I created a configuration to test logstash. The configuration log my local syslog in Kibana. That, that works. But if I try to do the same thing to log my log "/var/log/cron.log", that doesn't work. Actually, if I start a --debug -f, I see that turn in loop, without precise anything (or too much things... telling me nothing about the problem).

* * *

So, to launch the configuration, I use : /usr/share/logstash/bin/logstash --verbose -f 00\_input.conf

* * *

My configuration "input" :

```auto
root@Big-Monster:/etc/logstash/conf.d# cat 00_input.conf
input {
  file {
    id => "TEST-Syslog"
    path => ["/var/log/syslog"]
  }
  file {
    id => "TEST-Cron"
    path => ["/var/log/cron.log"]
  }
}
```

* * *

My configuration "output"

```auto
root@Big-Monster:/etc/logstash/conf.d# cat 99_output.conf
output {
  elasticsearch {
    id => "TEST-output-Syslog"
    hosts => ["127.0.0.1"]
    index => "syslog-%{+YYYY.MM.dd}"
    }
}
```

* * *

My index, till now :

```auto
root@Big-Monster:/var/log/logstash# curl -XGET 'localhost:9200/_cat/indices?v'
health status index uuid pri rep docs.count docs.deleted store.size pri.store.size
yellow open syslog-2023.11.21 cSp0rE4eRP20gd2eKSUtWw 5 1 163983 0 49.2mb 49.2mb
green open .kibana_task_manager _uJwCVxeSaiyRCSOXAqAIQ 1 0 2 0 12.6kb 12.6kb
green open .kibana_1 ML69D0WfRaSC3v1-aZpr_A 1 0 6 1 30.2kb 30.2kb
yellow open syslog-2023.11.20 BPSotvnQTVaFqeUGFoEz_g 5 1 206245 0 61.6mb 61.6mb
```

* * *

My "verbose" result, for now :

```auto
root@Big-Monster:/etc/logstash/conf.d# /usr/share/logstash/bin/logstash --verbose -f 00_input.conf
Notice : I tried to create differents pipelines too, instead of using one file input. For that, I updated the file pipeline.yml. But that doesn't work either.
Anyway, for now, I have that, in the pipeline.yml :
```auto
root@Big-Monster:/etc/logstash/conf.d# cat ../pipelines.yml
# This file is where you define your pipelines. You can define multiple.
# For more information on multiple pipelines, see the documentation:
# https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/logstash/current/multiple-pipelines.html

- pipeline.id: main
  path.config: "/etc/logstash/conf.d/*.conf"

```
Could someone help me ? I am novice, on ELK. That application is powerfull, but not so easy to understand 🙂
Best regards,
Chris
Hello,
It is not clear what your issue is and what is this second index you mention.
The output configuration you shared has only one output, with the index `syslog-%{YYYY.MM.dd}`, so all your data, no matter the input, will be sent to this index.
Hi, thanks
Ok, I explain that differently. I have two entry, in the input file. Yes. I have One entry in the output. Yeap. So, yes, "Syslog" and "cron" will be redirected in the same canal, the one I configured in the output. It shouldn't be a problem, I have a customer which have a similar configuration. That works well, apparently.
If that work for him, that should work for me. In first view, of course :). But, the problem, in my case, is that doesn't work, precisely. That turn in loop. As you can see in the logs I added in this thread :
```auto
Loop exited. Forcing reload

```
Anyway, I understand what you mean... I do not see the second index, because precisely I do not have a second output. Noted.
Ok... I can try to add another entry in my file "output". Something like that :
```auto
root@Big-Monster:/etc/logstash/conf.d# cat 99_output.conf
output {
  elasticsearch {
    id => "TEST-output-Syslog"
    hosts => ["127.0.0.1"]
    index => "syslog-%{+YYYY.MM.dd}"
    }

  elasticsearch {
    id => "TEST-output-Cron"
    hosts => ["127.0.0.1"]
    index => "Cron-%{+YYYY.MM.dd}"
    }
}

```
But how to make in sort the logs configured to the input "cron" be redirected to the output "cron" and not the output "syslog" ? Maybe we must have the same ID in both configuration input, ouput for cron, or something like that ? Maybe there is some subtility I missed.
Or I must, necessary, use multiple pipelines ? it is another question I asked here : [How to link input contain to output contain](https://discuss.elastic.co/t/how-to-link-input-contain-to-output-contain/347635)
Apologies, I am a newbe on ELK. I am precisely working to learn to use it. There is a lot of documentations, but it is not easy for me, stranger, to understand all. Even if I do my best 🙂
Best regards,
Chris
This is not a Logstash log, this is a log collected from the log files that logstash is reading.
the DEBUG level will show you everything logstash is doing, it is pretty rare to need to enable it, what you shared is normal behavior, Logstash is just showing you every message it is reading from the files you configured.
The _loop_ you mentioned is not a Logstash issue, from the logs you shared it is some issue with your snapd service.
