What is function of the non-data node?

In my experience, such nodes, make much lower demands on resources, but I'm not sure how to forecast what they will need. We had a non-elected master node that started showing low memory. I think the cluster config had grown to where it's ram/heap wasn't adequate.

the only reason for the non-data node is to form a 3 node cluster, which is the minimum recommended.
makes sense ?

Yes, and on recent versions, you could make it a "voting only" master and it would need even less resources.
