# Index.mapping.total\_fields.limit for multiple indices in an elasticsearch cluster

How does [index.mapping.total\_field.limit](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/7.7/mapping.html#mapping-limit-settings) works with multiple indices in an elasticsearch cluster?

Let's say if I need to increase the `index.mapping.total_field.limit` from the default 1000 to 2000 then will it be better to split the indices into two (in the same elasticsearch cluster) with each having `index.mapping.total_field.limit` set to the default 1000.

Elasticsearch Version - 7.7.1

That setting applies _per index_, so you can have (eg) 2 indices with less than the limit, 2 with 2000, 1 with 3000 etc.
