# Is embedding Elasticsearch \*for testing\* discouraged?

An [August 2016 blog post](https://www.elastic.co/blog/elasticsearch-the-server#_embedded_elasticsearch_not_supported) explained that embedding Elasticsearch is “inherently unsafe and not recommended for production” and would no longer be supported. Would someone clarify for me whether embedding _for automated tests_ is also deprecated/unsupported? I suspect that it is, but I’d appreciate knowing for certain.

Not really, no. You'd go through so much work to get a half way proper cluster set up and it wouldn't be quite right. The [maven](https://github.com/alexcojocaru/elasticsearch-maven-plugin) plugin should work. You _ought_ to be able to use the Elasticsearch gradle [plugin](http://search.maven.org/#artifactdetails%7Corg.elasticsearch.gradle%7Cbuild-tools%7C5.3.2%7Cjar) if you use gradle but the docs for that aren't as good.
