# Is it possible to not use shared file system while taking snapshots?

Hi,

The documentation [here](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/5.2/modules-snapshots.html#_shared_file_system_repository) says that we need to use shared file system to take snapshots and backup. Is is possible to not use a shared file repository?
