# Is sniff necessary with an ELB?

Hi,
I have a cluster with 3 master nodes. An elb points to the three master nodes and they're in an auto scalling group so if one of them is down we'll replace it with a new one.
With this architecture, is sniff still recommended? To my understand sniff return list of nodes that client can make requests to, but wouldn't that put extra load on data node and that is why we have master node?
