# Kibana Backward compatibility

Are the Kibana 4.1.1 dashboards compatible with previous versions of Kibana? I think the new charts aren't but what about the charts that use the same features as previous versions?
And, is the last version of Kibana compatible with elasticsearch 1.42 ?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by backward-compatible in this context. We introduced ability to export and re-import Kibana 4 charts in Kibana 4.1. Given that 4.1.1 is a bugfix release, charts exported from that release should be compatible with Kibana 4.1. You cannot import them into 4.0, since that version doesn't have import functionality, and you can't import them into Kibana 3, since that version uses a completely different dashboard schema.

Kibana 4.0.x and 4.1.x are compatible with Elasticsearch 1.4.4+

I can if I replace the .kibana index on my own. Would this cause a problem? I'm working with a test offline system and another online system for demo.

Honestly, I haven't tried that - I'd attempt this on a test system first, if at all... no guarantees. Whatever you do, back up the .kibana index! 🙂
