# Logstash could not start ' java.lang.IllegalStateException: Logstash stopped processing because of an error'

Hello,

I experienced an error as below while restarting the Logstash plain-log

[ERROR][org.logstash.Logstash] java.lang.IllegalStateException: Logstash stopped processing because of an error: (SystemExit) exit

This doesn't clearly tells what exactly need to look for, so how do we troubleshoot to get the root cause and give it a permanent fix.
