# Logstash elasticsearch input

I am trying to use logstash to copy an elasticsearch input to an elasticsearch output. The documentation tells me I can use query =\> "\*".

Using logstash 5.4, with an ES 5.2 input I get "root\_cause":[{"type":"parse\_exception","reason":"Failed to derive xcontent"}], which I think is telling me the query results are empty.

With a 5.4 input I get {"root\_cause":[{"type":"json\_parse\_exception","reason":"Unexpected character ('\*' (code 42)): expected a valid value (number, String, array, object, 'true', 'false' or 'null')\n

query =\> "{}" seems to work. The documentation for the logstash elasticsearch input appears to be wrong.

Yes, that's a documentation bug. A correction has been proposed ([https://github.com/logstash-plugins/logstash-input-elasticsearch/pull/31](https://github.com/logstash-plugins/logstash-input-elasticsearch/pull/31)) but currently can't be merged because of a missing CLA from the contributor.
