In the documentation for [lumberjack output](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/logstash/current/plugins-outputs-lumberjack.html#plugins-outputs-lumberjack), under the [ssl\_certificate](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/logstash/current/plugins-outputs-lumberjack.html#plugins-outputs-lumberjack-ssl_certificate) setting it just says, "This is a required setting" and "ssl certificate to use."

My questions are: what is this certificate used for, and why is it required? How do I perform client authentication, assuming this is not already being performed?

Note: I am sending logs from one logstash (client) to another (server). My server side is a beats input with no CA's specified and ssl\_verify\_mode =\> "none". When I tried adding the CA and specifying ssl\_verify\_mode to force\_peer it did not work.

The ruby [lumberjack client](https://github.com/elastic/ruby-lumberjack/blob/9df247e644eaf10fd634e00d255e09f2a4f7f7bf/lib/lumberjack/client.rb#L85) uses it. As I understand it the cert\_store should contain the CA of the server certificate that the client is to connect to. I see no way to enable client authentication.
