# Logstash on IBM AIX

Hello,  
I'm trying to do my first installation of logstash on an IBM AIX 7.1 environment.  
I've tried to use different JRE version, from 1.7 to 1.8 but I always receive the following error:  
io/console not supported; tty will not be manipulated  
NoMethodError: undefined method `captures' for nil:NilClass  
parse\_java\_version at /usr/src/logstash-1.5.3/vendor/bundle/jruby/1.9/gems/logstash-core-1.5.3-java/lib/logstash/util/java\_version.rb:33  
bad\_java\_version? at /usr/src/logstash-1.5.3/vendor/bundle/jruby/1.9/gems/logstash-core-1.5.3-java/lib/logstash/util/java\_version.rb:51  
warn\_on\_bad\_java\_version at /usr/src/logstash-1.5.3/vendor/bundle/jruby/1.9/gems/logstash-core-1.5.3-java/lib/logstash/util/java\_version.rb:10  
main at /usr/src/logstash-1.5.3/vendor/bundle/jruby/1.9/gems/logstash-core-1.5.3-java/lib/logstash/runner.rb:32  
(root) at /usr/src/logstash-1.5.3/lib/bootstrap/environment.rb:48

There is any way to make it works on my machines?

We don't support AIX sorry,.

I can see some people in the past have tried so you may be able to compile it there, but you are on your own I am afraid ☹

I'm also working on an AIX installation. Logstash 1.5.1 seems to work, but versions 1.5.2 and 1.5.3 produce the same error you are receiving.

My environment:

```
# oslevel -s
7100-03-04-1441

# which java
/usr/java71_64//jre/bin/java
# java -version
java version "1.7.0"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build pap6470_27sr3fp1-20150605_01(SR3 FP1))
IBM J9 VM (build 2.7, JRE 1.7.0 AIX ppc64-64 Compressed References 20150407_243189 (JIT enabled, AOT enabled)

So with an older version is working?  
Nice to know 🙂

For now I've solved using the logstash-forwarder-java, it works fine.  
I'll try your solution too.
