# Logstash-to-Logstash Communication, Beats input?

I see that Logstash has a [lumberjack input plug-in](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/logstash/current/plugins-inputs-lumberjack.html). I would have thought that the standard way for one logstash server to send logs to another logstash server would be to setup a lumberjack output and a lumberjack input. Why does the [documentation](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/logstash/master/ls-to-ls-lumberjack.html#ls-to-ls-lumberjack) say to use a Beats input for Logstash to Logstash communication??

The beats input also implements the lumberjack protocol and it has more features than the lumberjack input, so it is preferred.
