# Mapping changes in Elasticsearch 5.x

According to [5.x doc](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/breaking_50_mapping_changes.html#_literal_index_literal_property), the index option now accepts only true or false.

My question:  
Is it set to true by default or do I have to set it as true every time I want field values to be indexed?

```
{
  "my_index": {
    "mappings": {
      "blog": {
        "properties": {
          "title": {
            "type": "text",
            "index": "true"
          }
        }
      }
    }
  }
}

```

OR

```
{
  "my_index": {
    "mappings": {
      "blog": {
        "properties": {
          "title": {
            "type": "text"
          }
        }
      }
    }
  }
}

```

The default is true.

I've raised [https://github.com/elastic/elasticsearch/pull/27104](https://github.com/elastic/elasticsearch/pull/27104) to make that clear.
