# Maximum shards open 3000；es 7.3.0

today，my cluster has a warning ：maximum shards open 3000；  
How should I do？

As [large number of small indices and shards in a cluster can lead to performance and stability problems](https://www.elastic.co/blog/how-many-shards-should-i-have-in-my-elasticsearch-cluster), there is now a soft limit to the number of shards each data node can hold. This is set quite high and is there to protect you. I would therefore recommend looking at how you shard your data and aim to reduce the number of shards in the cluster rather than increase the soft limit.
