Both partition\_field\_name and by\_field\_name cause a "split" to the analysis (creates separate baseline statistical models). Either can be used (or both can be used to effectively create a "double-split").

Some nuances to their differences: [ML What is the difference between by\_field\_name and partition\_field\_name](https://discuss.elastic.co/t/ml-what-is-the-difference-between-by-field-name-and-partition-field-name/108720)
