What tools are generally used to monitor elasticsearch? I found few on the
web but it would be good to see which one is more preferred.

Head, Elastic HQ, Paramedic, Bigdesk and SPM are probably the main ones you
will see mentioned here.

Not quite sure what you're looking for exactly, but if you're monitoring
via Nagios, you may be interested in the check\_http\_json plugin, which
was originally designed with Elasticsearch in mind.

I second head, paramedia, and bigdesk for real-time monitoring. If you're
looking to do monitoring with alerting, I'd
recommend [GitHub - anchor/nagios-plugin-elasticsearch: An ElasticSearch availability and performance monitoring plugin for Nagios](https://github.com/anchor/nagios-plugin-elasticsearch).

We use Ganglia for metrics (
[http://ganglia.wikimedia.org/latest/?c=Miscellaneous%20eqiad&h=testsearch1002.eqiad.wmnet&m=cpu\_report&r=hour&s=descending&hc=4&mc=2](http://ganglia.wikimedia.org/latest/?c=Miscellaneous%20eqiad&h=testsearch1002.eqiad.wmnet&m=cpu_report&r=hour&s=descending&hc=4&mc=2))
and Nagios/Icinga for alerting ([Login - Wikimedia Developer Single Sign On](https://icinga.wikimedia.org/icinga/)). I
believe we use [https://github.com/anchor/nagios-plugin-elasticsearchunmodified](https://github.com/anchor/nagios-plugin-elasticsearchunmodified)
for monitoring and we use a modified version of
[https://github.com/ganglia/gmond\_python\_modules/tree/master/elasticsearchfor](https://github.com/ganglia/gmond_python_modules/tree/master/elasticsearchfor)
which is here:
[elasticsearch\_monitoring.py · operations-puppet](http://git.wikimedia.org/blob/operations%2Fpuppet.git/fd8c5a98f7bc03191fb73f3da00a9a20f4f540a1/modules%2Felasticsearch%2Ffiles%2Fganglia%2Felasticsearch_monitoring.py).

If you do look at the ganglia metrics please ignore the unchanging
metrics. They are from a broken version of the script and it isn't worth
my time to remove them because we'll be replacing the servers in a week any
way.
