# Must logstash-input-wmi be run on a Windows host, or can it be run on linux?

Obviously, logstash-input-wmi is only useful to collect data FROM windows hosts, but must the logstash instance running the logstash-input-wmi plugin necessarily be a windows host?

I've done WMI in the past from linux, using [this](https://www.aldeid.com/wiki/Wmic-linux), and I've run across [other](https://github.com/CoreSecurity/impacket) UNIX-based WMI implementations, so it doesn't seem completely obvious to me what platform is required by the plugin, and I didn't see anything in the source on github. (not that it isn't there, but I couldn't find it.)

from everything I know about the input yeah it has to be run on the host. Let me know if you find otherwise. I don't remember any "remote" option in the plugin
