# Node stats: Diff between available and free?

Hello,

Can anyone explain the different between "available\_in\_bytes" and "free\_in\_bytes" as used in the Nodes API: [https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/cluster-nodes-stats.html#fs-info](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/cluster-nodes-stats.html#fs-info)

`free` and `available` are respectively defined in terms of Java's [`FileStore#getUnallocatedSpace()`](https://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/api/java/nio/file/FileStore.html#getUnallocatedSpace()) and [`FileStore#getUsableSpace()`](https://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/api/java/nio/file/FileStore.html#getUsableSpace()):
