# One index template for multiple indices

Is it possible to use one index template for multiple indices? I have an index pattern of `cw-*` so that it matches any index that starts with `cw-` But I have an ILM policy attached to this template. It has an alias but from my understanding the alias can only point to one index. Does this mean I will need separate index templates for each index created?

What version are you on, [things did change in 7.8](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/indices-templates.html).
