# One snapshot repository for different clusters?

I'd like to understand what will happen if (e.g. by accident) two different clusters will backup to the same repository. Is that possible/allowed or will it corrupt the data? The documentation did not hint in either direction.

The [documentation](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/modules-snapshots.html) forbids it:

> If you register same snapshot repository with multiple clusters, only one cluster should have write access to the repository. All other clusters connected to that repository should set the repository to `readonly` mode.

If you allow two clusters to write to the same repository then it will at some point become corrupt.
